SUMMARY:MBL Ecosystems Center Webinar: "Will Land Feedbacks to the Climate System Accelerate Global Warming?" - Jerry Melillo\, Gus Shaver\, Ed Rastetter
DESCRIPTION:Introduction – Human disruption of the global carbon cycle is the primary driver of climate change.  Scientist at The Ecosystems Center have been studying the role of land ecosystems in the global carbon cycle using field experiments and simulation modeling for four decades.  Today\, three Center scientists will present examples of their work on the carbon cycle.  Jerry Melillo and Gus Shaver will summarize long-standing field experiments and Ed Rastetter will report on a set of modeling experiments. \nJerry Melillo – Climate change over the 21st century is projected to lead to soil warming and trigger a complex self-reinforcing feedback to the climate system.  Through this feedback\, warming begets warming by acclerating the decay of soil organic matter that releases carbon dioxide to the atmosphere\, which leads to more warming.  For the past three decades we have been warming soils 5oC above ambient in a forest stand at the Harvard Forest in central Massachusetts.  We found that soil warming results in a four-phase pattern of soil organic matter decay and carbon dioxide fluxes to the atmosphere\, with phases of substantial soil carbon loss alternating with phases of no detectable loss. Several factors combine to affect the timing\, magnitude\, and thermal acclimation of soil carbon loss. These include depletion of microbially accessible carbon pools\, reductions in microbial biomass\, a shift in microbial carbon use efficiency\, and changes in microbial community composition. Our results support projections of a long-term\, self-reinforcing carbon feedback from mid-latitude forests to the climate system as the world warms. \nGus Shaver will now talk about controls on self-reinforcing carbon feedbacks from Arctic tundra ecosystems.  \nGus Shaver – The cold\, wet soils of Arctic and boreal regions contain over twice as much carbon as is currently held in the global atmosphere.  For over 40 years Ecosystems Center ecologists have studied how these very large terrestrial carbon stocks are controlled\, with a focus on the balance of plant inputs of organic matter and losses by decomposition.  Our initial focus was on direct controls by climate factors such as temperature and length of the growing season\, but it very quickly became apparent that interactions between the carbon cycle and the nitrogen and phosphorus cycles were of overriding importance.  This led to a series of long-term experiments in which we manipulated temperature\, nutrient availability\, and light in contrasting tundra types dominated by different kinds of plants.  Insights from these experiments have contributed significantly to our current “stoichiometric” perspective on local and global regulation of terrestrial feedbacks\, as discussed by Ed Rastetter in the following talk. \nEd Rastetter – The amount of carbon stored in ecosystems depends on the amount of nitrogen in the ecosystem and the distribution of nitrogen between vegetation and soil organic matter.  We examine ways that the amount and distribution of nitrogen might change with climate change and the consequences for the amount of carbon stored in ecosystems. \nJoin the MBL Ecosystems Center scientists as they explore critical problems in environmental science. Inspired by their research\, seminars will touch on topics covered as part of the Semester in Environmental Science at the MBL\, and span diverse ecosystems ranging from Arctic tundra to temperate forests\, coastal marshes and wetlands to the open ocean\, deserts to Cape Cod’s salt ponds. Tune in to WCAI 90.1\, WNAN 91.1\, WZAI 94.3 or online at capeandislands.org. \nAfter graduating from Syracuse University’s Maxwell Graduate School in 1962\, James Purcell was appointed as a Kennedy Administration management intern and served the next fifteen years in the Atomic Energy Commission\, the Agency for International Development\, and the Bureau of the Budget/Office of Management and Budget. \nIn 1977\, he moved to the State Department\, where the deputy secretary of state asked him to oversee the creation of a new rescue organization for Vietnam War refugees in 1979. As “acting” and then “permanent” director of the new bureau for refugee programs (RP) from 1979 to 1987\, Mr. Purcell directed his team’s implementation of initiatives passed by Congress in the Refugee Act of 1980\, including consultations with state and local governments and other partners. Many of the original implementation measures were maintained and further refined by successor administrations. More than 1.1 refugees were resettled in the United States during his administration and many millions more (up to 10 million annually) were aided overseas. \nMr. Purcell was subsequently elected to two five-year terms as director general of the Geneva-based International Organization for Migration\, serving from 1988 to 1998. \nHe is presently board chair for USA for IOM\, a U.S. private sector advocacy and fund-raising organization. His book We’re in Danger! Who Will Help Us? Refugees and Migrants: A Test of Civilization was published in 2019.

From 2004 to 2012 she served as the sixteenth President of MIT\, the first life scientist and first woman in that role. As President\, Hockfield strengthened the foundations of MIT’s finances and campus planning while advancing Institute-wide programs in sustainable energy and the convergence of the life\, physical and engineering sciences\, with impact across the region\, the nation and around the world. She helped shape national policy for energy and next-generation manufacturing\, appointed by President Obama in 2011 to co-chair the steering committee of the Advanced Manufacturing Partnership and by serving as a member of a Congressional Commission evaluating the Department of Energy laboratories in 2015. As a biologist\, she pioneered the use of monoclonal antibody technology in brain research\, identifying proteins through which neural activity early in life effect brain development. Before joining MIT as its president\, she was the William Edward Gilbert Professor of Neurobiology\, Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (1998-2002)\, and Provost (2003-2004) at Yale University. In all her roles she has advanced opportunities for women and minorities. She studied at the University of Rochester and Georgetown University and carried out research at the NIH and UCSF before joining the faculty at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and then Yale. She is the past president and chairman of AAAS and currently is a director of the Charles Stark Draper Laboratory\, Partners HealthCare System\, and Fidelity Non-Profit Management Foundation. She is a life member of the MIT Corporation and a board member of the Belfer Center at the Harvard Kennedy School.

SUMMARY:Woods Hole Library Perennial Plant Sale
DESCRIPTION:Just like the Library’s time-honored Spring Plant Sale (which was not held this year for the first time in decades) all the plants will be donated by local gardeners\, so the plants are perfectly attuned to the local conditions (although the drought is taking a great toll). Both perennials and house plants will be available. Obviously since this is a Fall Sale\, annuals or vegetable plant starts will not be offered\, but the perennials should have plenty of time to settle into their new spots in Cape Cod’s long mellow autumn weather. \nAs always\, the Library asks people to donate their plants. Because of COVID restrictions the Library does not have the usual army of helpers to collect and pot up donated plants. Instead\, Master Gardener Kate Eldred\, of the Library’s Board and Plant Sale committee\, recommends that gardeners water their plants generously for a few days before they dig them\, and continue watering after they are potted to stabilize them. Pots are available at the Library’s lower level for pick-up any time. \nUnlike previous sales\, there are only two days for people to deliver plants to the Library. All donations\, already potted and labeled\, must be brought to the Woods Hole Library when it is open on either Thursday\, October 8 or Friday\, October 9 from 10 AM\nto 2 PM. (Donations cannot be accepted Saturday morning.) \nOn the day of the sale\, due to COVID restrictions\, shoppers must wear masks. The plants will be spread out more widely over a much larger area of the Library property so shoppers can stay 6 feet away from each other. As always\, but with even more reason now because of COVID\, it is suggested that shoppers do not arrive early for the sale. Library volunteers will ensure that people stay spaced out and will be available to help people carry their purchases to their cars.

SUMMARY:MBL Friday Evening Lecture: Forbes Lecture - “Personal\, National\, and World Crises” - Jared Diamond
DESCRIPTION:Nations experience crises\, whose solution requires adopting selective changes\, and which some nations are more successful at solving than are other nations. We as individuals also experience personal crises\, either associated with certain ages (e.g.\, teen-age or midlife crises) or else triggered by external shocks (e.g.\, relationship problems or break-ups\, the death of a loved one\, or a health or job or financial blow). The solution of a personal crisis also requires adopting selective changes\, which some of us are more successful at accomplishing than are others of us. Counselors and psychotherapists have identified many factors that make it more or less likely that an individual will overcome a personal crisis. In this lecture\, Dr. Diamond will examine the extent to which similar considerations help understand the outcomes of recent and impending national crises\, and the impending world crisis. \nJared Diamond is a Pulitzer-prize-winning author of five best-selling books\, translated into 38 languages\, about human societies and human evolution: Guns\, Germs\, and Steel\, Collapse\, Why Is Sex Fun?\, The Third Chimpanzee\, and The World until Yesterday. As a Professor of Geography at the University of California at Los Angeles\, he is known for his breadth of interests\, which involves conducting research and teaching in three other fields: the biology of New Guinea birds\, digestive physiology\, and conservation biology. Dr. Diamond’s prizes and honors include the U.S. National Medal of Science\, the Pulitzer Prize for Nonfiction\, the Tyler Prize for Environmental Science\, and election to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. He is a director of World Wildlife Fund/U.S. and of Conservation International. As a biological explorer\, his most widely publicized finding was his rediscovery\, at the top of New Guinea’s remote Foja Mountains\, of the long-lost Golden-fronted Bowerbird\, previously known only from four specimens found in a Paris feather shop in 1895.
