SUMMARY:MBL Falmouth Forum: “The Changing Face of Whale Trauma: What We Know and Have to Do” - Michael Moore
DESCRIPTION:Large whales have suffered at the hand of man for millennia: by intent with harpoons\, and recently by mistake through vessel collisions\, and fishing gear entanglements. This has affected both the status of populations\, and the welfare of individuals. The latter most especially\, where larger species\, such as North Atlantic right whales\, have the power to swim off with entangling gear\, whose deleterious effects can take months to be lethal. In this talk Moore will discuss how he\, as a veterinarian and a scientist\, and his colleagues have used diagnostics\, energetics\, therapeutics\, and photogrammetric health assessment to gain this understanding. He will also lay out the steps they are taking\, collaboratively with the fishing industry\, to enable both the industry and the animals to prosper. \nMichael J. Moore is a veterinary scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. He has studied the effects of trauma from the shipping and fishing industries on North Atlantic right whale (NARW) survival and welfare. He is currently assessing NARW health using aerial photogrammetry and working with a group of stakeholders to establish ‘On-Demand’ fishing systems as a viable tool to remove entangling line from the water column.

SUMMARY:MBL Falmouth Forum: “Dare to be Naive” - Greg Watson\, Director of Policy and Systems Design\, Schumacher Center for a New Economics
DESCRIPTION:Greg Watson and his family moved to Cape Cod in 1980 when he was hired as education director at the New Alchemy Institute. New Alchemy was a revolutionary “think-do tank” located on 12 acres in Falmouth\, MA that became world renowned for its systems approach to the development environmentally sound and socially just approaches to meeting basic human needs. Watson’s lecture will focus on the lessons he learned during his four years there and how he has applied New Alchemy’s problem-solving approach throughout his professional career in the areas of agriculture\, renewable energy\, community organizing\, and new economics. He will conclude with a discussion of his current work on an approach to addressing the climate crisis inspired by Buckminster Fuller – considered by many to be the “father of whole systems thinking.” \nGreg Watson is Director of Policy and Systems Design at the Schumacher Center for a New Economics. His work focuses on community food systems and an initiative to improve global systems literacy informed by a reimagining of Bucky Fuller’s World Game Workshop. Watson has spent nearly 50 years studying systems thinking as inspired by Buckminster Fuller and to apply that understanding to achieve a just and sustainable world. He has served on the board of the Buckminster Fuller Institute and as a juror for the Buckminster Fuller Challenge. In 1978 he organized a network of urban farmers’ markets in the Greater Boston Metropolitan Area. He served as Commissioner of Agriculture in Massachusetts from 1990 to 1993 and again from 2012 to 2014 when he launched a statewide urban agriculture grants program. \nWatson gained hands-on experience in organic farming\, aquaculture\, wind-energy technology\, and passive solar design at the New Alchemy Institute on Cape Cod\, first as Education Director and later as Executive Director. There he led the effort to create the Cape & Islands Self Reliance energy cooperative. He served four years as Executive Director of the Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative\, a multicultural grassroots organizing and planning organization where he initiated one of the nation’s first urban agriculture projects. Watson was the first Executive Director of the Massachusetts Renewable Energy Trust and was part of the team that landed the National Wind Technology Testing Center in Massachusetts. He served on President-elect Barack Obama’s U.S. Department of Energy transition team in 2008. In 2015 he founded the Cuba-U.S. Agroecology Network which links small farmers and sustainable farm organizations in both countries to share information and provide mutual support.

SUMMARY:MBL Friday Evening Lecture Series: "Pocket Doctors: Diagnosing Diseases with Mobile Phones" - Dan Fletcher
DESCRIPTION:Lecture Abstract:\nLight microscopy remains a central tool for disease diagnosis. Direct imaging of pathogens in blood\, sputum\, and stool can enable rapid screening and diagnosis of multiple diseases and has been in use since the earliest days of the microscope. However\, modern microscopy requires advanced equipment and skilled users typically not available outside of well-equipped laboratories and hospitals. In recent years\, mobile phones have emerged as powerful tools for capturing clinically useful data. This talk will describe ongoing work using mobile phones as light microscopes for disease diagnosis. By combining mobile phone cameras with optical attachments and automated image processing\, we aim to expand access to basic diagnostic testing for diseases that range from blood-borne pathogens to viral infections. These mobile phone microscopes also open up new possibilities for biological discovery outside of the laboratory. \nDaniel A. Fletcher is the Chatterjee Professor of Bioengineering & Biophysics at the University of California\, Berkeley. He and his laboratory develop new technologies to study the role of mechanics in biology and detect diseases in low resource settings. Their cell biological work is identifying how molecular-scale forces drive spatial organization of membranes and the actin cytoskeleton and movement of immune cells and pathogens. Their diagnostic work is introducing new mobile tools to fight infectious diseases with collaborators around the world. Fletcher is a faculty member in the Bioengineering and Molecular and Cell Biology Departments\, a Visiting Investigator of the Gladstone Institutes at University of California\, San Francisco\, and is currently Director of the Blum Center for Technology and Development. He is also a Chan-Zuckerberg Biohub Investigator\, Faculty Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory\, and co-Director of the Physiology Course at the Marine Biological Laboratory. Dan received a DPhil from Oxford University\, where he was a Rhodes Scholar\, a Ph.D. from Stanford University\, where he was an NSF Graduate Research Fellow\, and a B.S. from Princeton University. His research has received an NSF CAREER Award\, a National Inventors Hall of Fame Collegiate Award\, and was designated “Best of What’s New” by Popular Science magazine among other awards. He has been a Miller Professor\, a Bakar Fellow\, a Hellman Fellow\, and served as a White House Fellow during the Obama administration.

SUMMARY:MBL Friday Evening Lecture Series: “Big Ideas from the “Little Brain”: Insights from the Cerebellum about Learning and Meta-Learning” Jennifer L. Raymond
DESCRIPTION:The brain is a learning machine\, storing information about the statistical relationships between events in the world\, and using that information to guide behavior. In this lecture\, Raymond will share insights about the neural mechanisms of learning from her research on the cerebellum\, or “little brain.” The cerebellum is well known for its role in motor skill learning and is increasingly implicated in cognitive functions ranging from navigation to emotion\, social behavior\, and reward prediction. Yet the circuit architecture of the cerebellum is highly conserved and relatively simple\, creating an opportunity to understand the principles governing computation in this circuit\, and the algorithm it uses to tune its own performance through experience. By leveraging the analytical advantages of the cerebellum\, Raymond’s laboratory recently discovered a new property of synapses that seems to provide a mechanism for meta-learning\, or learning to learn. \nJennifer L. Raymond is the Berthold and Belle N. Guggenhime Professor of Neurobiology\nStanford University School of Medicine. She grew up in Seekonk\, Massachusetts\, spending as much time as possible at and in the ocean. Raymond earned a B.A. in Mathematics from Williams College. She then became interested in how neural circuits compute and conducted her dissertation research at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston on the neural mechanisms of learning in the marine mollusk Aplysia californica. Raymond transitioned to studying learning in the mammalian cerebellum as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California\, San Francisco. She joined the faculty at Stanford as an assistant professor in 1999 and built a research program investigating the algorithms used by the brain to implement learning and memory. Her work is noted for being particularly integrative\, spanning from the molecular details to the computational principles governing the changes in a neural circuit during learning. Raymond’s scientific achievements have been recognized with awards including a Sloan Fellowship\, a McKnight Scholar Award\, and the Albert & Ellen Grass Lectureship at the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience. She is also an award-winning teacher. In addition to her neuroscience research\, Raymond has done research and written extensively about the practice of science and been a longtime advocate for changes to advance diversity and equity in the scientific workplace.

SUMMARY:MBL Friday Evening Lecture Series: “Big\, Diverse\, and Standardized: The Use of NEON Data in Scientific Discovery” - Paula Mabee
DESCRIPTION:The collection and open release of the most highly standardized and diverse environmental data in the U.S. by the NSF National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) are facilitating new pathways of discovery across the sciences. These big data and massive samples\, acquired at sites across the U.S. through the coordinated efforts of humans and technology\, provision the opportunity for innovative research across biological scales and across multiple areas of science\, including ecology\, computer science\, biodiversity\, genetics\, and engineering. Though only in its second of 30 years of planned operations\, the use of these open data and infrastructure assets by researchers and educators have already resulted in unique insights\, approaches and findings\, which Dr. Mabee will describe in her lecture. NEON will advance the understanding of ecological processes\, inform the sustainable management of U.S. ecosystems\, and inspire an expanding global scientific landscape of environmental monitoring infrastructure. \nPaula Mabee became the Chief Scientist and Observatory Director for the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) in early 2020. She was most recently a Nolop Distinguished Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of South Dakota\, serving in that capacity since 1997. Dr. Mabee joined the National Science Foundation in 2015\, serving until 2017 as Division Director for the Division of Environmental Biology in the Directorate of Biological Sciences. Prior to 1997\, she held assistant and associate professorships at San Diego State University. Dr. Mabee holds a B.A. in both biology and religion from St. Olaf College in Minnesota\, a Ph.D. in zoology from Duke University. She was a postdoctoral fellow at the Smithsonian Institution in the Division of Fishes and an NSF postdoc in developmental biology at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia. During her career\,Dr. Mabee has authored more than 60 research publications\, received 12 NSF and NIH research grant awards totaling close to $7 million\, and held numerous editorial and advisory board positions. She was named an AAAS Fellow in 2004 for her fundamental studies in evolutionary and developmental biology.

SUMMARY:MBL Friday Evening Lecture - “How I Have Scientific Fun: Discoveries\, Mechanisms\, Therapeutics\, and Learning” - Timothy Springer
DESCRIPTION:Scientists can have fun and adventure. Dr. Springer’s lecture will provide four insights into how. \nMaking discoveries: How do the white cells in our blood recognize other cells or exit the bloodstream to fight cancer or infection? The discovery of adhesion molecules\, including integrins\, using antibodies unveiled the answer. \nUnraveling mechanisms: How do integrins transduce chemical signals into cell locomotion and other vital cell functions? The mechanisms hinge on integrins adopting three “conformational states” and transmitting forces across cell membranes between extracellular footholds and the cytoskeleton\, thereby stabilizing integrins’ active state. \nEngaging in entrepreneurship: New targets in cell-cell recognition and trafficking and new molecular mechanisms have enabled the development of new therapeutics and the launch of companies to develop and provide them to patients. Here lies the origin of biomedical success stories including\, LeukoSite\, Morphic Therapeutic\, and the Institute for Protein Innovation. \nLearning how to learn: Scientists are privileged because their domain requires them to perpetually learn and develop new skills\, ideas\, and even disciplines. Research shows that those who challenge themselves and deliberately practice new skills succeed more than those who possess a high IQ. \nTimothy Springer is an award-winning scientist\, eight-time entrepreneur\, and philanthropist. He is currently Latham Family Professor of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Boston Children’s Hospital. Dr. Springer has more than 500 publications and 30 patents. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and was awarded the Cancer Research Institute Coley Award\, the Crafoord Prize\, and the prestigious Canada International Gairdner Prize among others. After earning his Ph.D. in molecular biology and biochemistry from Harvard\, Dr. Springer began his post-graduate career in the laboratory of Nobel Laureate Cesar Milstein in Cambridge\, England. The research with monoclonal antibodies launched his extensive and award-winning work on adhesion receptors in the immune system. His discoveries allowed him to launch LeukoSite in 1993\, the first of seven successful companies that he founded or invested in\, including the COVID vaccine-creator\, Moderna Therapeutics. His discovery work and entrepreneurship led to the development and approval of seven therapeutics that have treated hundreds of thousands of patients. As a philanthropist\, Dr. Springer leveraged his entrepreneurial success to launch the Institute for Protein Innovation in 2017\, a unique nonprofit research institution providing synthetic antibodies and deep protein expertise to accelerate biological research and therapeutics. He has also endowed Chairs and Professorships at Harvard Medical School\, Boston Children’s Hospital\, and the University of California. Dr. Springer is a former MBL Whitman Scientist and Director of the Physiology course. He is currently a member of the Board of Trustees.

SUMMARY:WHFF Virtual: Olympia
DESCRIPTION:The Woods Hole Film Festival season series WHFF Virtual presents the award winning narrative feature\, OLYMPIA\, including an online Q&A with the filmmakers on Saturday\, April 24 at 7pm EST. \nABOUT THE FILM:\nIn the same vein as Albert Maysles’ “Iris\,” this sublimely intimate fly-on-the-wall verité documentary tells the poignant story of a woman finding her own voice on her own terms to assert a gigantic creative force into the world. Rebelling against her old world\, panty-sniffing\, suspicious Greek mother to assert her strong sexual drive\, fighting the feeling she was “too ethnic” amid the Boston Brahmin at BU\, and starting her own theatre company in New Jersey instead of waiting for the phone to ring\, Olympia Dukakis models how to live life with blazing courage. \nThroughout an engrossing story that seamlessly blends past and present\, she opens her heart and exposes her truest self to the audience. The raw honesty with which Olympia leads us into the core of her self is what makes this film luminary. As fellow actors with whom she has shared the limelight Laura Linney\, Diane Ladd\, Whoopi Goldberg\, and Austin Pendleton all testify\, Olympia is “totally open and crazy”\, which is what turns out to be the marker of her absolute sanity. \nThis intimate portrait of a working-class professional\, a scholar actor of intense intuitive power\, and a woman beloved around the world\, culminates on the steps of the Dukakis’ humble ancestral home in Lesbos\, Greece. Here we see Olympia’s life come full circle\, both personally and professionally. \nIncandescent and unforgettable\, Olympia is a must-see documentary for anyone seeking to reignite their love of drama and their love of life. (Available to watch in the USA only) \nWatch the trailer:\n \nFor the best community viewing experience\, we recommend starting the film at 5:00 p.m. EST on Saturday\, April 24 and then joining WHFF Executive Director Judy Laster and the filmmakers for the Q&A on Zoom at 7:00 p.m. EST. \nThe film will be available to watch between Thursday\, April 22 at 8am and Sunday\, April 25 at midnight EST. SUMMARY:MBL Ecosystems Center Webinar: "Will Land Feedbacks to the Climate System Accelerate Global Warming?" - Jerry Melillo\, Gus Shaver\, Ed Rastetter
DESCRIPTION:Introduction – Human disruption of the global carbon cycle is the primary driver of climate change. Scientist at The Ecosystems Center have been studying the role of land ecosystems in the global carbon cycle using field experiments and simulation modeling for four decades. Today\, three Center scientists will present examples of their work on the carbon cycle. Jerry Melillo and Gus Shaver will summarize long-standing field experiments and Ed Rastetter will report on a set of modeling experiments. \nJerry Melillo – Climate change over the 21st century is projected to lead to soil warming and trigger a complex self-reinforcing feedback to the climate system. Through this feedback\, warming begets warming by acclerating the decay of soil organic matter that releases carbon dioxide to the atmosphere\, which leads to more warming. For the past three decades we have been warming soils 5oC above ambient in a forest stand at the Harvard Forest in central Massachusetts. We found that soil warming results in a four-phase pattern of soil organic matter decay and carbon dioxide fluxes to the atmosphere\, with phases of substantial soil carbon loss alternating with phases of no detectable loss. Several factors combine to affect the timing\, magnitude\, and thermal acclimation of soil carbon loss. These include depletion of microbially accessible carbon pools\, reductions in microbial biomass\, a shift in microbial carbon use efficiency\, and changes in microbial community composition. Our results support projections of a long-term\, self-reinforcing carbon feedback from mid-latitude forests to the climate system as the world warms. \nGus Shaver will now talk about controls on self-reinforcing carbon feedbacks from Arctic tundra ecosystems. \nGus Shaver – The cold\, wet soils of Arctic and boreal regions contain over twice as much carbon as is currently held in the global atmosphere. For over 40 years Ecosystems Center ecologists have studied how these very large terrestrial carbon stocks are controlled\, with a focus on the balance of plant inputs of organic matter and losses by decomposition. Our initial focus was on direct controls by climate factors such as temperature and length of the growing season\, but it very quickly became apparent that interactions between the carbon cycle and the nitrogen and phosphorus cycles were of overriding importance. This led to a series of long-term experiments in which we manipulated temperature\, nutrient availability\, and light in contrasting tundra types dominated by different kinds of plants. Insights from these experiments have contributed significantly to our current “stoichiometric” perspective on local and global regulation of terrestrial feedbacks\, as discussed by Ed Rastetter in the following talk. \nEd Rastetter – The amount of carbon stored in ecosystems depends on the amount of nitrogen in the ecosystem and the distribution of nitrogen between vegetation and soil organic matter. We examine ways that the amount and distribution of nitrogen might change with climate change and the consequences for the amount of carbon stored in ecosystems. \nJoin the MBL Ecosystems Center scientists as they explore critical problems in environmental science. Inspired by their research\, seminars will touch on topics covered as part of the Semester in Environmental Science at the MBL\, and span diverse ecosystems ranging from Arctic tundra to temperate forests\, coastal marshes and wetlands to the open ocean\, deserts to Cape Cod’s salt ponds. Deepen your knowledge about global change\, and unexpected consequences of human activity on our planet. \nParticipants will have an opportunity to submit questions during the webinar. Please contact ses@mbl.edu if you have any questions or issues with the registration process.
