SUMMARY:MBL Friday Evening Lecture Series: “Kinase Turntabilism: Tuning T Cell Activation” - Avery August\, HHMI; Cornell University
DESCRIPTION:Whether you’re in Woods Hole or halfway around the world\, join us for this venerable MBL lecture series. \nLectures are free and open to the public for in-person and virtual attendance. No registration required for in-person attendance. Doors open at 7:30 PM\, lectures start at 8 PM in the Cornelia Clapp Auditorium. \nAvery August\, Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and HHMI Professor of Immunology\, Cornell University \nThe CD4+ T cell immune responses include a range of effector cell types that produce inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines. The differentiation of these effector cells requires signals from the antigen-specific T cell receptor complex. How this one receptor generates such varied response remains highly investigated. This lecture will explore the role of the tyrosine kinase Itk\, which regulates T cell Receptor signal strength\, in tuning the activation and differentiation of CD4+ effector cell balance. \nAvery August received a BS in Medical Technology from California State University\, Los Angeles\, a Ph.D. in Immunology from Cornell University’s Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences and a post-doctoral fellowship at the Rockefeller University. After a brief stint in industry at the R.W. Johnson Pharmaceutical Research Institute as a Scientist\, he moved to The Pennsylvania State University where he was Distinguished Professor\, prior to moving to Cornell as Chair of the Department of Microbiology & Immunology. He is currently HHMI Professor\, Professor of Immunology\, and Deputy Provost at Cornell University. He is the chair of the Steering Committee for ABRCMS\, and has led the development of programs aimed at diversifying STEM at all levels. He has served on several national and international government and non-profit committees. His research focuses on understanding the signals that regulate the balance of inflammation and pathology.

SUMMARY:MBL Friday Evening Lecture Series: Mark Barrow\, Virginia Tech
DESCRIPTION:Whether you’re in Woods Hole or halfway around the world\, join us for this venerable MBL lecture series. Lectures are free and open to the public for in-person and virtual attendance. \n“Carson’s Clarion Call: The Noisy Response to Silent Spring” – Mark Barrow\, Virginia Tech \nThe publication of Silent Spring (1962) generated a firestorm of controversy and helped catalyze the modern environmental movement. Why did Rachel Carson’s critique of modern pesticides have such a far-reaching impact? This lecture argues that its influence grew out of a convergence of Carson’s authority as both scientist and bestselling author\, a cultural climate of heightened anxiety about postwar chemical and nuclear technologies\, and the aggressive strategies of her critics. A trained biologist and accomplished writer with access to a broad network of scientific experts\, Carson offered readers a compelling\, accessible synthesis of the risks associated with the postwar embrace of synthetic pesticides. Equally important\, Silent Spring appeared at a moment of growing public concern over widely publicized chemical and pharmaceutical safety scandals and radioactive fallout from atmospheric nuclear testing. Finally\, the response of Carson’s critics—including chemical companies\, economic entomologists\, and U.S. Department of Agriculture officials—proved largely counterproductive: their concerted efforts to discredit Carson only amplified her message\, ensuring that the reaction to Silent Spring was anything but silent. \nMark V. Barrow\, Jr. is a professor of history at Virginia Tech whose work spans environmental\, animal\, and American cultural history\, as well as the history of biology\, natural history\, and wildlife conservation. A prizewinning teacher and scholar\, he is the author of A Passion for Birds: American Ornithology after Audubon (Princeton University Press\, 1998)\, Nature’s Ghosts: Confronting Extinction from the Age of Jefferson to the Age of Ecology (University of Chicago Press\, 2009)\, and Gator!: The Making of America’s Iconic Reptile\, from First Encounters to Florida Man (University of Chicago Press\, forthcoming). His research has been supported by the American Philosophical Society\, the National Science Foundation\, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. \nNo registration required for in-person attendance. Doors open at 7:30 PM\, lectures start at 8:00 PM.

SUMMARY:MBL Friday Evening Lecture Series: Rachel Meyers\, Sunrise Bioventures
DESCRIPTION:Whether you’re in Woods Hole or halfway around the world\, join us for this venerable MBL lecture series. \nLectures are free and open to the public for in-person and virtual attendance. \n“RNAi Across Scales: From Model Organisms to Clinical Therapies” – Rachel Meyers\, Sunrise Bioventures \nThis talk traces the path from fundamental discovery of small interfering RNA (siRNA) to highlighting the engineering and innovations needed to translate siRNA into a clinical therapeutic. RNA interference (RNAi) emerged from two unexpected observations: the puzzling co-suppression of pigmentation genes in petunias\, and the discovery in C. elegans that double-stranded RNA could trigger potent\, sequence-specific gene silencing. These findings revealed a conserved biological mechanism and launched a new therapeutic modality capable of silencing disease-causing genes with incredible precision. \nRachel Meyers is an entrepreneurial scientist actively involved in the biotech and pharma community. She is a member of the board of directors for Korro Bio\, a nucleic acid therapeutics company focused on RNA editing as well as an Atlas Ventures StealthCo in the nucleic acid therapeutics space. She serves as a scientific advisor to Alnylam Pharmaceuticals\, the pioneer of RNAi therapeutics; Arrakis Therapeutics\, a small-molecule company focused on targeting RNA; and CAMP4 Therapeutics\, a nucleic acid therapeutics company focused on upregulating RNA transcription. Meyers is a founding partner of Sunrise Bioventures\, a nucleic acid accelerator\, and serves as acting CEO at AmyGo Solutions\, a startup focused on early detection in amyloidosis. In addition to other advisory roles across industry and academia\, Meyers serves as a mentor with several local and national biotech entrepreneurial programs. \nNo registration required for in-person attendance. Doors open at 7:30 PM\, lectures start at 8 PM in the Cornelia Clapp Auditorium.

SUMMARY:MBL Friday Evening Lecture Series: Maria J. Harrison\, HHMI; Cornell
DESCRIPTION:Whether you’re in Woods Hole or halfway around the world\, join us for this venerable MBL lecture series. \nLectures are free and open to the public for in-person and virtual attendance. \n“Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Symbiosis: Uncovering the Biology of an Ancient Interkingdom Mutualism” – Maria J. Harrison\, HHMI; Cornell \nThe symbiotic association of plants and arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi originated over 450 million years ago and is thought to have enabled plants to colonize land. Over 70% of extant vascular flowering plant species have retained the capacity to host AM fungi in their root cells and benefit from mineral nutrients delivered via their fungal partners. In this lecture\, Harrison will discuss the biology of the symbiosis\, including the cellular modifications that enable root cells to accommodate AM fungi\, and the mechanisms of carbon and phosphorus exchange between symbionts. \nMaria J. Harrison is the William H. Crocker Distinguished Scientist at the Boyce Thompson Institute and an Adjunct Professor in the School of Integrative Plant Science at Cornell University. She received a bachelor’s degree in microbiology from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne (UK) and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Applied Molecular Biology from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UK). She completed postdoctoral training with Dr. Richard Dixon in the Plant Biology Division of the Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation and subsequently held an independent scientist position there before joining the Boyce Thompson Institute in 2003. In 2015\, she received the Cornell College of Agriculture and Life Science Faculty Excellence in Undergraduate Research Mentoring Award and the American Society of Plant Biologists Dennis R. Hoagland Award. She is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and a Fellow of the Royal Society. Her research program focuses on the arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis with the goals of understanding the molecular basis of its development and the mechanisms underlying nutrient transport and regulation of the symbiosis. This research lays the foundation for the development of crops optimized to acquire mineral nutrients via their fungal partners. \nNo registration required for in-person attendance. SUMMARY:MBL Friday Evening Lecture Series: George O’Toole\, Dartmouth
DESCRIPTION:Whether you’re in Woods Hole or halfway around the world\, join us for this venerable MBL lecture series. \nLectures are free and open to the public for in-person and virtual attendance. \n“The Microbiome: From Guts to Lungs” – George O’Toole\, Dartmouth \nThe human gut microbiome (the microbes in your intestine) are sometimes considered the largest organ in the human body. In fact\, we are made of equal numbers of human cells and bacterial cells. There is a growing appreciation that the microbes in the gut can impact distant body sites\, including the brain and the airway. By studying infants and children with cystic fibrosis (CF)\, we reveal that the best way to predict disease in the airway is the composition of the microbes in the gut. Jumping off from this observation\, we show evidence for this gut-to-lung connection we call the “gut-lung axis.” I’ll discuss how we’ve moved from a clinical observation\, to understanding some fundamental microbe-host connections\, to taking the first steps toward a therapy to treat airway diseases like CF using a gut-focused probiotic. \nGeorge O’Toole joined the Geisel School of Medicine as an Assistant Professor in 1999 and was promoted to Professor in 2010. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with Dr. Jorge Escalante-Semerena and performed postdoctoral studies at Harvard Medical School as a Damon-Runyon and Hood Fellow with Dr. Roberto Kolter. O’Toole’s honors include an NSF Career Award\, Dupont Young Investigator Award\, Pew Scholar in the Biomedical Sciences\, election as a fellow of AAAS and the American Academy of Microbiology and serving as Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Bacteriology. O’Toole’s laboratory studies surface-associated microbial communities called biofilms\, including how these communities form and how we can destroy them. They also study the microbial communities in the gut and the airway of people with cystic fibrosis\, and how the gut and airway communicate to influence health. \nNo registration required for in-person attendance. Doors open at 7:30 PM\, lectures start at 8:00 PM.
