Kids flocked to Woods Hole this summer to play with a new app which was designed to lead young people on a scavenger hunt of science, discovery and plain old fun all over the kid-friendly village of Woods Hole. The free app is easily downloaded on your mobile phone, and offers fun for all ages.
Developed by Zephyr Marine and Aecern, this inventive way to engage kids in the discovery of a seaside village on Cape Cod received grants from the Woods Hole Community Association, the Martha’s Vineyard Savings Bank and the Woods Hole Business Association. The app allows kids to choose an avatar, like a chatty crab or a smiling shark, then answer questions that lead them on a scavenger hunt to interesting spots all over town including the aquarium, WHOI’s Ocean Science Exhibit, the Rachel Carson sculpture, the famous Woods Hole drawbridge and much more.
“There is so much for kids to see and do in Woods Hole,” said Quicks Hole owner Beth Colt, “it’s as if the village was designed for family fun. The Woods Hole Business Association was thrilled to be involved in a small way in the development of this great tool.”
“Watching young people engage with technology to discover and learn from the great outdoors and all Woods Hole has to offer is really exciting,” said Dr. Andone Lavery, WHOI Scientist and Co-Founder of Aecern. “We are pleased to have been able to participate in such a innovative community project.” Aecern is a Woods Hole-based education organization that creates discovery learning tools and experiences for students from Cape Cod to Cape Hatteras to Cape Town, South Africa.
Rob Reynolds of Zephyr Marine said, “This project meets our mission of helping to make the public aware of the marine science resources in Woods Hole, and we are so excited to share it with everyone visiting Woods Hole.” Zephyr Marine Education Foundation is located at 97 Water Street, and offers a marine science and technology program for visiting school groups.
